We need a thread where we can discuss movies we watched, and we need it to have a typo in the title okay?
I have watched Starting out In The Evening. Purely 'cause Lauren Ambrose is really hot and because Frank Langella is lovely. The movie sucked copious amounts of dick though, bummer

I have also watched
Bande A Part again, for the lord knows how many times in the past few years, purely 'cause it's wonderful. People keep pimping Contempt (which is shit) and Breathless (which is good) as Godard's best films but this one is light years better IMO, purely 'cause the quirks are that much more wonderful, the cinematography is more fun, there's more nonsense and the story's just more interesting to me.
Yes! Talk about flims!

I don't think I've ever seen Bande A Part, but I do think Breathless is one of his best.
I watched Natural City and Bloody Mallory this weekend. Both good, yet completely different.
Natural City is taughted as the Korean Blade Runner. This is only slightly true. Yes, there is a marked Ridley Scott influence, and there are similar themes sort of, but it's not Blade Runner Korean style. For the budget it is a very spectacular movie, visusally. The script wasn't bad, the acting damn good and when it was over I was sad it ended. In my opinion that is a mark of a very good movie.
Bloody Mallory. How does one explain Bloody Mallory? It's Buffy meets Recident Evil meets Scooby Doo, meets Pricilla Queen of the Desert. You will either love it or hate it. It was a fun, no thinking on my part, movie and I think I will purchase this film for nights I can't sleep and need whimsy with a dragqueen.

Totally agree with you, and why the fuck didn't Bardot get naked?! That whore!
Over the weekend I saw
Die Hard. It is the perfect movie to use as a barometer for a screenplay, believe it or not. You got a story that is driven mostly by action. The main character betters himself through the movie. AAAAAND you're raising the stakes throughout. Come on! The fucker had NO SHOES ON! NO SHOES! Awesome movie.
I've been trying to track down the movie that opened Sundance this year, In Bruges. Even tried to enlist Ringo's help in the request thread, but he's all "stream? what? me no know how to get stream! me get headaches!" I've heard nothing but great things coming from it and it's always cool to see one of my favorite new actors from a few years ago, Colin Farrell, get back to form here after quite a few bad choices.

The "lol stream" isn't just lol because of the stream, it's basically the equivalent of:
LL: I'd like pictures of Sophia Bush naked, and please make sure she's shaved.
Ringo: lol shaved.
If it's not there at all, how am I gonna find the special stuff?!
Dawson Leery
Mar 3 2008, 01:36 PM
So you can't even find it for download?
Also, I'd like pictures of Sophia Bush naked and shaved.

The only In Bruges out there is apparently the trailer, in loop, for two hours!
And don't we all

Vantage Point looks good, but I'm too lazy to go see it. The Kingdom looks good too, and I had downloaded it, but it didn't have subtitles so I didn't know what the desert people were saying and deleted it.

I was told by a reliable source that Vantage Point is a very good movie and would have been a better movie if they had not given away one of the twists in the trailer.

This topic should become a discussion of how wonderful Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is. I can't believe it's been like, 3 years since I saw it. And 4 years ago last month I saw it for the first time. It was so awesome, I found myself planning to go see it again the next day minutes after it had finished. And the next day I saw it again. The rest of the decade has been shit and not as good. So fuck everyone in Hollywood not involved in this film.

I watched "4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" last night and "Brick" this morning. I was fine with the original Fantastic Four movie because I thought it was light and kept to the spirit of the comic (not to mention the abbreviated runtime minimizing any potential damage), but this one just sucked. "Brick" on the other hand is obviously awesome, and I can't believe I didn't watch it until now. I am also now reminded of how stupid it was to kill Nora Zehetner off of "Heroes". I hold out hope that a resurrected Eden is connected to this season's cliffhanger.
Hunter Fallow
Mar 6 2008, 01:41 PM
I told you about Brick but noooooooooo no one listens to me

I saw L'Armee Des Ombres, which was unbelievably, unequivocally and unabashedly awesome and outstanding. The shots were out of this world, the film looked godly and the story was crazy good. One of those films I'm not gonna forget for a while.
On the topic of Eternal Sunshine, it's one of the few gems in a horrible decade and was probably my 1st or 2nd favourite film this decade up until this year where it's around 4-5.

No Country For Old Men is so wonderful. All the performances are great, the writing is tight, it looks awesome, paces perfectly. Finally I don't have to say Knocked Up is the best film of 2007.

I saw In the Wild this weekend. Good movie, sad , but good. It was so beautiful to look at many times. I already knew the story so the ending didnt' make me as sad as it could have. I really got the feeling he was mentally ill tho. I wonder if I'm the only one that thought that? The movie made me really want to put my plan to remodel a camper and just travel in action. I'll not live off the wilderness tho. I could......but I won't.
I get No Country for Old Men today. I'm very excited. My dad told me it was the best zombie movie he'd ever seen, I'm looking forward to see what that's all about. You'd just have to know my dad to understand. I'm a lot like him, we are way odd and have our own world. It amuses us. Enough said.
I also so Dan In Real Life. It was cute, but nothing I would say.......damn this is a movie you HAVE to see. I also saw August Rush and I loved it. I wasn't expecting to. I had mild interest in it, but my best friend really wanted to rent it.........I loved it, man I didn't want to, but I so did. I dunno, maybe I'm a sucker for a love story.

Gone Baby Gone was awesome. I saw it a couple weeks back, and it really followed the book, which was awesome as well. Casey Affleck is obviously the more talented actor in the family, and Ben did a really good job directing it. I hope he directs more movies, I liked his style.

Mar 22 2008, 02:28 AM
Of course, Casey is tremendous. The voice is what hinders a lot of things, but the more I hear it the more I believe in the characters he's portraying (from the trailers of course as I've yet to see the movies.)
Speaking of which, I just got done with No Country For Old Men. WOW. Brilliant movie. I don't think there's much else I can say about it. It was at least good to see such a dark movie have its seldom comedic breakdowns as you can't always have an extremely dark movie. I completely understand why it won Best Movie. Seriously. Excellent film.

Mar 22 2008, 10:21 AM
I've watched Casey grow as an actor and it's really an awesome transformation. I mean, lets face it, in the beginning he was really crappy. A woman at work told me he was the worse part of that move and I said wtf? He nailed that Massachusetts malaise that tends to flow through the working class. Of course, he was just really playing himself.
He could have gone over the top with it, but luckily for us he didn't.
I have No Country right now and I'll probably get around to it tonight or tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it.

So I tried to go through the Richard Kelly filmography today and...my God, Southland Tales just was not interesting in the slightest. Darko was great, despite the fact that it's hugely overrated for ZOMG SCIENCE STUFF BROUGHT UP IN MOVIE. Gyllenhaal went from me thinking he was an asswipe to a good person towards the end, and the soundtrack was wondrous. But Southland Tales seems like it'll be too boring on the way to that "Timberlake lip synchs The Killers" part.

As part of my laid back Easter, I watched No Country for Old Men. I loved this movie. I loved the pacing and the lack, for the most part, of a musical score. It was stripped down and bare bones, the way a western should be. My dad called this the best zombie movie he ever has seen and I agree. Chigurh just kept coming, slowly stalking, deliberate and determined. I give this 10-10. I will hail this as the best zombie/western of all time.
I have heard so many people bitch about and how it just ends. Neither of these bothered me at all. Kudos to the Coen brother's for remaining true to the book and keeping the tone of the story intact. This is their best work to date.

The ending can be simply defined as, "That's life."
I love it.
Lorelai Gilmore
Mar 25 2008, 02:39 PM
I was never sold on tidy Hollywood endings anyway. I have always argued, that if art imitates life, then why don't movie or book endings sometime reflect a truth. The truth being.......things don't always end up neatly tied into a bow. Life does not always resolve itself. I think that is the part in most movies that has always bugged me. Sometimes the guy does not get the girl, the hero gets killed, and the bad guy wins. I'm okay with that, but sadly most people aren't. They have been spoonfed pat or formulaic endings for so long that when a 'real' ending happens, they don't like it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for fantasy and sometimes I like for things to be gift wrapped for me. Just give me some realism occasionally for variety.
